My four year old, is she just difficult, or does she have a learning disability ?

I have a four year old daughter that for the life of me I can't teach. She refuses to sit and listen to what I have to say. I have tried many different things to encourage her to learn, but it never goes anywhere. I am starting to question the depth at which she is able to learn. We just tried playing candyland and I had to walk away because she wasn't even trying to comprehend how it's played. We tried for about an hour on the game alone. My husband thinks that I am over reacting I think he is under reacting. Does anyone else have a child like this? And if so how did/do you handle it. I am at my wits end not to mention we have a newborn so totally sleep deprived. Please help, I am starting to question my abilities as her mother.

Your daughter sounds normal. And, no, you're not overreacting. Of course you should wonder, you're her mommy and you love her!

I would keep an eye on her, and observe how she does after she's been in Junior Kindergarten for a month or so. Keep in touch with the teacher to see how she's learning in the classroom environment. Often, things become very different once school starts. Only then will you have a better idea because children learn and act very differently around mommy and daddy than others.

To put your mind at ease, our 4-year old daughter was (is!) Miss Silly Pants too! We'd teach her (or try), and just shake our heads (including Candy Land!). Funny thing, now that she's in school, we're finding that all of the things we tried to get through to her DID get through to her. She just didn't share it with us until later! Oh - and I'm talking about things that we taught her - even months and months ago - not about what the teacher has taught.

The odds are that one day she's going to come home and sound like a genius! Good luck sweetie!

Your daughter doesn't need to be tested or sent to a doctor and certainly not tied down (what a creep!). She's not lazy or stupid or bad. Your daughter is just a normal normal, wonderful, dynamic and imaginative 4-year old.

I want CANDY! Take a trip with me to candy land. Yummy :p
